In a tragic turn of events, numerous individuals sustained injuries and several lost their lives when a vehicle crashed into a crowd at the Lapu Lapu Filipino Festival in Vancouver, Canada, as reported by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) on Sunday (Indian time).
The driver, who operated a black SUV, drove into the street festival located at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser Street shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday and is currently in police custody.
This incident unfolded during the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, an annual celebration honoring the Philippines' first national hero.
The Vancouver Police shared on X, stating, "A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured after a driver drove into a crowd at a street festival at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser shortly after 8 p.m. tonight. The driver is in custody. We will provide more information as the investigation unfolds."
Disturbing footage from the scene has emerged on social media, depicting several victims on the ground, with some appearing deceased or critically injured.
Eyewitnesses reported that the victims were struck while either walking or waiting at food trucks that were set up along the street.
New Democratic MP Don Davies expressed his sorrow on X, stating, "Just heard the tragic news of the horrendous attack at the Lapu Lapu festival. I am praying for all the victims and their families."
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim also shared his condolences, saying, "I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event… Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time."
A significant presence of emergency services is currently at the scene, and investigations are underway. Reports indicate that it is still uncertain whether the crash was a result of an accident or an intentional act.
The Lapu Lapu festival, which was intended to celebrate Filipino culture, has now transformed into a scene of grief and turmoil.
