Rohit Sharma's return to form in the current season of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has changed the fate of Mumbai Indians (Mi). The team has performed brilliantly by winning all of the last six matches. Rohit's innings also contributed significantly to the victory against Rajasthan Royals on Thursday, 1 May. However, one of his DRS decisions in this match has created a ruckus on social media.
A controversial decision was seen at the beginning of the match. When Rajasthan's fast bowler Fazalhak Farooqui was throwing the second over of the innings, he dismissed Rohit Sharma on a slurry ball. The umpire raised a finger without delay, but Rohit decided to take DRS at the last minute. Not only cricket fans but also experts were shocked. Actually, by the time Rohit Sharma took DRS, the timer was over by then.
However, the dispute started from here. According to the timer on the field, Rohit indicated 'T' after the end of 15 seconds deadline. Generally, the player has to take a decision within 15 seconds to take DRS, but the umpire recognized it and the third umpire's opinion was taken.
It was clear in the replay that the ball was getting pitch out of the leg stump, and the umpire's decision was overturned. After this decision, Rohit Sharma batted in the rhythm and scored 53 runs from 36 balls, which included 9 fours. This was the third fifty in his last four innings and this strengthened the start of Mi.
However, along with the praise of Rohit's runs, there was a tremendous criticism on social media about the DRS controversy. Many fans raised questions that when the time of DRS was over, the umpire allowed the review. One user wrote, "If the timer will not be followed, what is the meaning of that?" At the same time the other said, "There should be no place for such decisions in a big tournament like IPL."
This dispute has once again launched a debate on the quality of umpiring and following the rules in the IPL. Some former players have also raised doubts on this issue and demanded clarity from BCCI.
