There were numerous significant revelations in the latest Marvel film, Thunderbolts*, directed by Jake Schreier. A considerable portion of the film also serves as a setup for next year's Avengers: Doomsday and other films in the upcoming phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, one question still remains unanswered: the 'real' identity of Geraldine Viswanathan's Mel. Does she possess a super identity as well? In a recent interview, one of the producers of Thunderbolts* hinted that Mel may have more to her than initially apparent.
Is Mel actually Songbird in the MCU? At the
Thunderbolts* premiere in Los Angeles, executive producer Brian Chapek was asked by
IMDb to share some behind-the-scenes trivia about the superhero film. He seemingly confirmed that Mel will evolve into Songbird in the future of the MCU. He remarked, "There is a character that fans are trying to figure out is she or is she not — I would say what emblem does she wear that may or may not hint at this character’s larger identity.”
Geraldine Viswanathan, who is of Indian descent, joined
Thunderbolts* after Ayo Edebiri departed from the project. She portrays Mel, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine's (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) personal assistant. During promotions for the film, Geraldine has remained tight-lipped about the character's future and has maintained that Mel is simply a regular young woman. She told
Collider about her character, "It felt very clear what to track, and it was really just about that internal struggle, but also what makes her pop is you don't really know where her head's at because you're not really following her, but she then ends up driving a lot of the plot. She is also kind of instigating big things."
Who is Melissa Gold aka Songbird?
In addition to her name Mel, another hint that she might be Songbird is the bird necklace that Geraldine wears in the film. According to the comic books, Songbird possesses sonic powers and utilizes sonic screams to incapacitate foes. She can also create solid constructs from sound. Currently, Mel does not exhibit any powers in the MCU, but that could certainly change in the future if she returns and continues to collaborate with the Thunderbolts, who are now the new Avengers.
