Rohit Sharmaone of India cricket’s most iconic figures, has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket. Despite making his ODI debut in 2007, it wasn’t until 2013 that he earned his maiden Test cap. On Wednesday, Rohit took to social media to confirm the end of his journey in the longest format, bringing the curtains down on a decade-long red-ball career marked by both flair and fortitude.

A Test career that began late but flourished

Rohit made a memorable Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in November 2013, where he struck a magnificent 177. Over the next decade, he evolved from a middle-order bat to a reliable Test opener. In 67 Test appearances, Rohit amassed 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, registering 12 centuries and 18 fifties, with a career-best score of 212.

  • At home, Rohit was prolific, scoring 2,535 runs at a remarkable average of 51.73, including 10 centuries.
  • Overseas, however, his returns were modest: 1,644 runs in 31 Tests at an average of 31.01.
  • He also added 122 runs at neutral venues (WTC finals).

The writing was on the wall during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australiawhere Rohit’s form dipped alarmingly. After missing the first Test, he returned for the second but never looked comfortable. In the series, Rohit accumulated only 31 runs across five innings, averaging just 6.20, the lowest average for any touring captain in a Test series in Australia. The sharp decline in form served as a grim reminder that age and reflexes were beginning to catch up.

Rohit was entrusted with the Test captaincy following Virat Kohli’s departure and led India in 24 Tests, registering 12 wins, 9 losses, and 3 draws. As a captain, he scored 1,254 runs at 30.58, including 4 centuries and 4 half-centuries. While he guided India through some key transitional phases, his stint was marred by injuries, inconsistent overseas performances, and mounting pressure from emerging young talents.
