IAF Wing Commander Vyomika Singh: Indian Air Force Wing Commander Vyomika Singh is in the news. She held a press briefing on 'Operation Sindoor' with Colonel Sophia Qureshi of the Indian Army. Vyomika Singh got a Short Service Commission (SSC) in the Flying Branch of the Air Force in 2004. She is a brave helicopter pilot.

You can get recruited in all three forces - Army, Navy, and Air Force - after passing 12th through the NDA. To join the Air Force and Navy, one must pass 12th from the Science stream (PCM). Now, women can also go to the National Defense Academy. The age limit for an NDA is 16.5 to 19.5 years. Permanent commission is available in all three forces through an NDA.

AFCAT exam of the Air Force

The Indian Air Force conducts AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) for the recruitment of unmarried men and women. To get recruited in the flying branch of the Air Force through this, the age should be between 20 to 24 years. Candidates should have passed 12th (PCM) from the Science stream with 50% marks. Also, a graduation degree should be passed with 60% marks in any stream. B.Tech should be done for the technical branch. Short Service Commission is available in the Air Force through AFCAT.

CDS means Combined Defense Services

Not only the Air Force, one way to become an officer in all three forces is to become CDS, i.e., Combined Defense Services. Through this, one gets a short service commission in the armed forces. For the army, one must have graduated from any stream. Whereas, for the Air Force, one must have graduated from 12th (PCM) and any stream. Whereas, to join the Navy, one must have a B.Sc. (Physics, Maths) or an engineering degree.

NCC Special Entry Scheme

NCC Special Entry is a special way to become a pilot in the flying branch of the Indian Air Force. B.Tech degree holders or final year students can apply. For this, one must have a C certificate in NCC Air Wing. There is no written exam in this. Instead, there is a direct interview. There is an Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) interview.
