Bengaluru-based AI startup Sarvam AI has launched Bulbul V2, which is making headlines for several reasons. Know that it is an advanced text-to-speech (TTS) model and it supports 11 Indian languages, which is one of the most important highlights of the model. “Meet the all-new Bulbul. Natural, familiar speech in 11 Indian languages, with authentic accents that sound just like India,” Sarvam AI said in a post on X.

As per the AI startup, the latest version has natural-sounding speech, regional accents, and customisable voice options. Yes, the model even allows you to train it with your own voice. While bringing Bulbul V2, Sarvam AI positions itself as a strong alternative to global players like ElevenLabs.

Bulbul V2: What’s new?

What’s new in Bulbul V2? It is an upgrade from its previous version, which was launched in August 2023. The new model focuses on:

  • Support for 11 Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi, and Odia.
  • It also ensures the speech output sounds familiar and natural to native speakers.
  • The model delivers responses quickly, with a P90 latency of 0.398 seconds, which is faster than ElevenLabs’ 0.945 seconds.
  • Moreover, it enables businesses to create distinct voice identities for branding and personalisation.
  • It is cheaper. At Rs 15 per 10,000 characters, Bulbul V2 is five times cheaper than its competitor.

Sarvam AI and its journey

Sarvam AI is an AI startup that focuses on building artificial intelligence models, especially for India. It was founded in July 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, and Sarvam AI was recently selected to construct the first large language model (LLM) for India under the IndiaAI Mission.
