When does one become Principal Secretary?

An IAS officer gets promotion after a fixed time, which depends on his performance, service period and government approval. Usually, it takes 30 to 33 years of service for an officer to become a Principal Secretary. That is, if an officer becomes an IAS at the age of 25, then he reaches the post of Principal Secretary at the age of about 55-58 years. This post is one of the highest posts in the state government and in this the officer works to advise the Chief Minister or the Council of Ministers.

What is the salary of the Principal Secretary?

The post of Principal Secretary comes in Level 17, which is the highest level in the pay scales fixed by the Central Government. IAS officers posted on this post get a salary of 2,25,000 per month. Apart from this, they also get many allowances and facilities like government accommodation, staff, vehicle, medical and travel allowance.

How much difference does the initial salary make?

When an IAS officer starts his service, he starts getting a salary of about 56,100 (Level 10). That means, from the beginning of his career till he becomes the Principal Secretary, his salary increases almost four times.
