Piers Morgan has pleaded for and to go out and sign an elite striker in the wake of their sobering exit .

The Gunners crossed the channel knowing that only a win would do against the French champions after losing last week's first leg 1-0 at The Emirates. But they were beaten 3-1 on aggregate at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night after failing to catch 's side cold with a barrage of pressure at the start of the match.

Defeat in Paris means Arsenal will end the season trophyless as they had already fallen behind at the summit.

Scrutiny on Arsenal's decision to following their elimination from Europe - and it was cited instantly on social media by a disappointed Morgan on Wednesday night.

He wrote: "Arteta should stop pretending we’re the best team in Europe when we’re not even the best team in England… and we will never win big trophies until or if we sign a proper class striker. Everyone knows this."

The well known broadcaster also rubbished Arteta's claims that the Gunners deserved to progress as there 'had not been a better team than Arsenal' in the Champions League this season, branding his words as "delusional twaddle."

Do you agree with Morgan?

The bullish Arsenal chief was asked post-match if he felt the better team lost and replied: "100 per cent. I don't think there's been a better team [than Arsenal] in the competition from what I have seen, but we are out. This competition is about the boxes and in both boxes are the strikers and the goalkeepers and their's was the best in both games.

"I am so proud of the players. They deserve a lot of credit for what they are doing in the context of the situation and the amount of injuries, probably the worst state you could arrive here as a team. To come here with a different context and still do that, it gives me a lot of positives for the future but tonight I am very upset."

Arteta even went on to claim that was what he was told by the coaches on the bench - only for Enrique to shoot down that claim. He said: "I don’t agree at all. Mikel Arteta is a great friend but I don’t agree at all. I think they played in a clever way and they got the match to the right moment for them because they played in the way they want and love to play.

"But I think in the two legs, we scored more goals than them and, in football, that is the most important thing. I have to say, Arsenal played a great match and we suffered a lot."
