In a decisive action to ensure the availability of vital goods and manage inflation, the Indian government has issued a stern warning to traders, wholesalers, and retailers regarding hoarding practices. Pralhad Joshi, the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, stated that strict penalties will be enforced against anyone found breaching the regulations set forth by the Essential Commodities Act.
During a press conference, the minister emphasized, "All entities involved in the trade of essential commodities must fully cooperate with law enforcement. Engaging in hoarding or attempting to manipulate supply chains will lead to severe legal repercussions."
As part of a broader initiative to enhance market transparency and protect consumer rights, the government has implemented several regulatory measures. Traders and retailers handling essential items such as sugar, wheat, and pulses are now required to regularly report their stock levels through official channels. For instance, sugar traders must provide weekly stock updates every Monday, while wheat traders are obligated to report every Friday. Furthermore, stock limits have been established—3,000 tonnes for wholesalers and 70% of processing capacity for millers—to prevent excessive accumulation.
An online stock monitoring system for pulses has also been introduced, mandating stakeholders to report their inventory levels. This initiative aims to mitigate speculative activities like forward trading and ensure a consistent supply of pulses nationwide.
To keep track of price fluctuations, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has broadened its surveillance to include daily wholesale and retail prices of key food items. These measures are anticipated to provide early alerts and facilitate timely policy responses to protect consumer interests.
The government has urged all supply chain participants to act responsibly and support its efforts to maintain price stability and ensure the smooth availability of essential goods. Non-compliance will result in strict legal action under applicable laws.
"Market exploitation or consumer manipulation will not be tolerated. The government is dedicated to ensuring fair trade practices and a sufficient supply of essentials," the minister concluded.
