Charlie Woods, the son of legendary golf player , has failed to qualify for this year's on his second attempt. The 16-year-old was left disappointed after entering qualifying for the major championship, which will take place at Oakmont in Pennsylvania in June.

Woods was among more than 10,000 players battling to book a spot at the event during a regional qualifying event at Wellington Golf Club in Florida on Thursday. However, the teenager shot three over par and failed to make the cut. The hopefuls were required to finish in four-under-par to progress to the next stage, meaning he was seven shots away from making the grade.

Despite Woods' disappointment, he improved on his efforts to qualify for the US Open last year at the Legacy Golf and Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

In that event, he shot nine-over-par before rebounding to qualify for the US Junior Amateur. But he missed the cut at the competition by 18 strokes.

Arth Sinha was the most impressive qualifier this year, going round the course in six under, bettering Matthew Marigliano by one shot.

Tyler Stachkunas, Carson Klawonn and Michael Gligic were also among the entrants for the final qualifier at Emerald Dunes in West Palm Beach, Florida.

It will be a one-day, 36-hole showcase with a spot in the 125th US Open on offer for those who sit atop the pile.

Woods will go away and continue to work on his game as he combats the immense pressure of following in his 15-time major champion father's footsteps.

Tiger is facing his own battles after undergoing surgery on a torn achilles in March, his latest injury setback.

In December, the 49-year-old hailed his son's improvement on the course and spoke highly of his potential in the game of golf.

"He has gotten better at every facet of the game," Woods said as he played alongside Charlie at the PNC Championship.

It's a 36-hole scramble event only open to past major or The Players winners and a member of their family, and Charlie fired a maiden hole-in-one as they finished second.

Woods added: "That's a commitment to practising and developing as a player. I think that most of us forget he's only 15 years old.

"I know he's been doing this in front of the media for a long time, but, being only 15, I think it's incredible what he's been able to accomplish so far, and the ceiling that he has is unlimited."
