People receiving Personal Independence Payments (PIP) from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) could be eligible for a range of additional financial benefits through various perks and discounts.

PIP is usually paid every four weeks, with the exception of terminally ill claimants who receive weekly payments. The payment rates are divided into two components: Daily Living and Mobility.

The amount you receive for either or both of these components depends on your condition and its impact on you. Typically, the standard rate for the Daily Living component is £72.65, while the enhanced rate is £108.55.

For the Mobility component, the standard rate is £28.70, and the enhanced rate is £75.75. In addition to this income, there are also other benefits and discounts available through various schemes that could help reduce living costs, including vehicle and council bills.

Blue Badge scheme

For those with disabilities affecting mobility, travel can be challenging. However, a Blue Badge can significantly alleviate this issue.

Blue Badges are designed to assist individuals with disabilities or health conditions by allowing them to park closer to their destination. The badge permits the holder, or anyone driving them as long as they are in the vehicle, to use disabled parking bays and even park on double yellow lines.

A Blue Badge offers more than just convenient access - it can also provide financial benefits as badge holders often enjoy free parking in disabled bays or car parks. Moreover, the badge isn't tied to a specific vehicle and can be used in any car the holder is travelling in, including taxis.

In England, a Blue Badge can cost up to £10, while in Scotland it's priced at £20. In Wales, it's issued free of charge.

Local authorities are responsible for processing these badges, determining eligibility and setting the price.

Generally, a Blue Badge remains valid for up to three years, after which the holder must reapply.

Council tax discounts

Council tax bills experienced a significant hike this April with some areas witnessing increases as high as 9%. Some PIP claimants could qualify for a discount on their council tax, however, it is at the discretion of your local council to determine your eligibility and the amount of discount you'll receive.

As such, it's recommended that you reach out to your local council directly to discuss a potential discount if you're a PIP claimant.

Motability scheme

The Motability Scheme enables individuals receiving certain disability benefits, such as PIP, to use some or all of their award to lease a new car, scooter, or wheelchair-accessible vehicle. Additionally, the scheme covers costs related to maintenance, repairs, and insurance for its customers.

If you're unsure about your qualification for the Motability Scheme, you can use the scheme's online tool here. The tool will ask who you're enquiring for, which benefit or allowance you currently receive, and the remaining duration of your benefit.

Railcard discount

Those claiming PIP could be eligible for a Disabled Persons Railcard, potentially saving an average of £126 annually. To apply for this railcard, which offers discounts on various train journeys, you'll need to get in touch with your local council.

More information is available on the Disabled Persons Railcard website

Vehicle tax discount

PIP claimants receiving the standard rate mobility component could be entitled to a 50% reduction in vehicle tax. However, the vehicle must be registered in the name of the disabled person or their nominated driver.

To make a claim, you'll need a letter or statement from the DWP showing your PIP rate and the dates you're receiving it, as well as the vehicle's log book, a V10 form, and an original MOT or GVT certificate if required for the vehicle.

You can then send these details to DVLA, Swansea, along with a cheque or payable order for 50% of the full rate of car tax for the vehicle.
