New Delhi: Volkswagen started bookings for the upcoming Golf GTI on May 5th, 2025 and have completed the booking of their first batch of 150 units. Earlier, Volkswagen were supposed to import 250 units of the Golf GTI but could manage only 150 units for the first lot and the allotment was made through an online quiz.
The participants had to score at least 4 of the 5, following which they had access to the pre-booking link, limited to just one entry per phone number. After the prices are announced, cancellation could happen, giving others a chance at allotment. Introduced by the German brand in 1974, the Golf has been one of their longest-standing car from Volkswagen.
The estimated price of the Golf, according to media sources, could be in the range of Rs 60 lakh, with the official announcement happening later in the month. The deliveries will start in June from selected dealerships in the country. The popular hatchback in India will have the 2-litre TSI engine producing 256 bhp and 370 Nm of peak torque, making it Volkswagen’s most powerful car in India, going past the newly launched Tiguan R-Line SUV, which produces 204 bhp.
The Golf GTI will come with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that sends the power to the front wheels and an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock. Golf GTI can go from 0-100 kph in 5.9 seconds with the top speed limited to 250 kph. The car will be a competitor to the Mini Cooper S, which has a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine that produces 204 bhp and goes from 0-100 kph in 6.6 seconds.
The Golf GTI’s interior features comes with a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel with paddle shifters, a 10.25-inch driver’s display, and a 12.9-inch touchscreen. Further, it will have a 7-speaker sound system, wireless charging, ambient lights and a panoramic sunroof along with tartan seat upholstery and red accents to give a sporty feeling.
The Golf’s exterior will include the illuminated VW logo that will be above the LED headlights, with the front bumper having a large honeycomb-pattern air put along with X-shaped fog lights. The GTI badge will feature on the front doors, with a strip as a bridge in the headlamps and the brake callipers finished in the same colour. It features 18-inch alloy wheels, with the rear coming with smoked LED tail-lights, prominent roof spoilers and twin exhaust pipes. The colours on offer for the Golf GTI will be Grenadilla Black, Oryx White, Moonstone Grey Black and Kings Red.
While there is little doubt that the Volkswagen Golf GTI is one of the best hot hatches ever made, it might be a little too much dent for the wallet. In the money which brings SUVs to Indian homes, it will be interesting to see how the Golf GTI finds its share market. For Volkswagen, it will be a return to the hatchback market since the Polo’s departure from the market in 2022.
