KL Rahul was widely considered the frontrunner to step in as India's Test captain following Rohit Sharma's unexpected retirement from the format. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appears to have other plans, with Shubman Gill emerging as a potential successor. An official announcement is anticipated around May 23rd or 24th.
Reports suggest that Rahul, now 33, has been passed over for the captaincy due to concerns about his consistency, despite his impressive performance during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The selectors seem to believe that his age and fluctuating form may not make him the ideal long-term leader.
According to a report, it was noted:
“It is understood that KL Rahul isn’t being considered as an option, as he is already 33 plus, and consistency has been an issue with the Bengaluru player even though he was one of the better performers in Australia.”
Rahul has captained India in three significant Test matches, securing victories in two. While he is expected to remain a key player, his chances of reclaiming the captaincy seem slim.
In terms of statistics, Rahul has accumulated 3,257 runs across 58 Test matches, boasting an average of 33.57. He has achieved eight centuries and 17 half-centuries. His performance in England has also been respectable, with 614 runs in nine matches at an average of 34.11.
