Local fire authorities said on Sunday that 19 people were critically hurt and one Hamburger SV supporter received “life-threatening injuries” during celebrations following the team’s return to the Bundesliga.

When hundreds of Hamburg supporters swarmed the field on Saturday to celebrate promotion, the Hamburg Fire Department called for a “major emergency response.”

Of the 44 supporters who needed medical attention, 25 were transported to nearby hospitals, five of whom had just minor wounds.

With a 6-1 thumping of Ulm, Hamburg secured its much-anticipated return to the top flight, guaranteeing it a spot in the top two of Germany’s second tier and automatic promotion to the Bundesliga.

After being demoted from the top league, Hamburg missed out on promotion for six seasons until winning on its seventh try.

Because it was the only Bundesliga team still in existence to have participated in every season since its founding in 1963, the team was formerly known as “der Dino.” However, following a number of near misses, it was ultimately demoted in 2018.

The Bundesliga Returns to Hamburg SV

After a seven-year break, six-time German champions Hamburg SV were triumphantly promoted back to the Bundesliga. Their 6-1 thumping of Ulm on Saturday ensured that they would finish in the top two of the second division with one game remaining.

In 2018, the 1983 European Cup champions—once known as the Bundesliga “dinosaurs” for holding the top spot for the longest continuous period since the league’s founding in 1963—suffered their shocking first-ever relegation.

They then lost crucial games in the closing stages of past seasons and wasted several chances to climb back up, but this time they would not be denied promotion.

Tom Gaal gave Ulm an unexpected lead in the seventh minute, but Hamburg rallied three minutes later to tie the score through Ludovit Reis.

After Hamburg goalie Daniel Heuer Fernandes stopped Semir Telalovic’s penalty kick in the 36th minute, Ulm scored twice late in the first half thanks to Davie Selke’s 22nd league goal and a fantastic chip from Ransford-Yeboah Koenigsdoerffer to take a dominating lead.

Philipp Strompf’s own goal in the 49th minute put them ahead 4-1, and Koenigsdoerffer’s solo effort and low shot from the edge of the box gave him his second goal. On the final whistle, supporters flocked around the pitch to storm it after Daniel Efadli scored six goals in the 86th minute.

Hamburg leads with 59 points with one game left, followed by Cologne with 58 and Elversberg with 55.

The Bundesliga’s 16th team and the third-place team in a promotion/relegation playoff. The third division is the new home for Ulm.
