Virat Kohli has officially brought the curtain down on his illustrious Test career, leaving Indian cricket fans stunned. As speculation over his future in red-ball cricket ended with an emotional Instagram post on Monday, a particular detail caught everyone’s eye — the number #269 mentioned in his farewell message.

“I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile. #269, signing off,” Kohli wrote.

So, what does #269 mean?

It’s not a cryptic code or a record. The number represents Kohli’s Test cap number — he was the 269th cricketer to represent India in Test cricket, making his debut in 2011 against the West Indies.

Kohli Reflects on His Journey in Whites

In his post, Kohli spoke candidly about his journey over 14 years in Test cricket:

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket... It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life... There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites.”

He added that stepping away wasn’t easy but felt right, expressing gratitude to the game, his teammates, and fans.

A Record-Breaking Career

Kohli exits the longest format with a legacy few can match. He finishes with:

  • 9,230 runs
  • 210 innings
  • Average of 46.85
  • 4th highest Test run-scorer for India, behind only Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.

His departure comes on the heels of Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Tests as well, leaving India without two of its modern batting pillars ahead of the England series.
