Cannes Film Festival Kicks Off with High Hopes

The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival commenced on Tuesday, generating excitement for what promises to be an extraordinary event. With a star-studded lineup, renowned filmmakers, and a backdrop of political intrigue, the French Riviera is set to dazzle over the next twelve days. The festival will showcase a series of high-profile premieres. During the opening ceremony, Robert De Niro was honored with an honorary Palme d’Or, nearly five decades after his film Taxi Driver clinched the festival's top award. Following a successful 2024 festival that introduced several Oscar contenders, including Emilia Perez and The Substance, anticipation is palpable.

Indian Films in the Spotlight

  • Aranyer Din Ratri: This classic by Satyajit Ray, featuring Sharmila Tagore and Soumitra Chatterjee, is set for a screening.

  • Tanvi The Great: Anupam Kher returns to directing with this film, which will premiere at Cannes on May 17 before its theatrical release.

  • Homebound: Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, this film stars Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter and has been selected for the 'Un Certain Regard' section.

  • Charak: Directed by Sheiladitya Moulik, this film will also be showcased at the festival.

  • A Doll Made Up Of Clay: This production from the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute has been chosen for the prestigious La Cinef section, which highlights student filmmakers.

Simi Garewal's Cannes Debut


Veteran actress Simi Garewal is making her debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, participating in the screening of the 4K restored version of Satyajit Ray’s 1970 film, Aranyer Din Ratri. Garewal, who portrayed a tribal Santhal girl named Duli in the film, will attend the event under the Cannes Classics section on May 19. She recently shared a video on Instagram showcasing her outfit selection for the occasion. At 77, Garewal has chosen a design from Karleo, a couture label by Karan Berry and Leon Vaz. In her Instagram post, she expressed her excitement about the event and the aesthetics of the designers she chose.
