IPL 2025: Before the final phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, many foreign players are withdrawing from the tournament for various reasons, which has increased the concern of the teams. In such a situation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a big step and has allowed franchises to sign temporary replacement players. This decision has been taken in view of the final phase of the League starting on 17 May.
The BCCI has clarified that temporary replacement players can only be included for this season and will not be able to retain next year. This rule has been made so that teams cannot make their team the desired by misusing this system.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Jamie Overton and Delhi Capitates opener Jake Fraser-Mackgrak will not be available in the last phase of the tournament already. Apart from this, there is also uncertainty about the participation of names like Mitchell Starc, Jose Butler, Triston Stabs and Kagiso Rabada.
The league informed the franchisees in a memo that, "Given some foreign players’ national commitments, personal causes or unavailability due to injury/disease, temporary replacement players will be allowed until the end of this tournament."
Further in the memo it was said that, "This decision has been taken on the condition that whatever temporary replacement players will be taken from now on, they will not be retained next year. These players will have to register again in the IPL 2026 auction."
Meanwhile, the BCCI has also made it clear that the players who had been signed by the teams before the league suspension can be retained. This means that CSK can maintain dewald bravis, Ayush Mhatre and SK Rashid.
Sedikullah Atal from Delhi Capitals, Mayank Agarwal from Royal Challengers Bangalore, Nandre Burger from Rajasthan Royals, Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Gynts and Mich Owen from Punjab Kings can also be kept in teams.
