The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season two is now ready to watch and talks about a controversial topic from the very beginning.
Eight months have passed since the mom influencers of Provo, Utah, shot to fame with their own reality show.
Although they're tied to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the families can't help but make headlines whether it be a swinging sex scandal or a domestic violence arrest.
Back by popular demand, the mums are back as season two drops on Thursday, May 15, available on across the pond and for UK viewers.
And in the very first episode, the second series of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives talks about the controversial topic of ketamine therapy.
Jen and Zac Affleck, actor Ben Affleck's cousin once removed, walk into a session of ketamine therapy, with Jen opening up about their reasons for trying it out.
She explained: "Zac and I definitely have a lot of work on and ketamine therapy is supposed to reset a lot of past traumas or habits you've created.
"Ketamine is in the gray area when it comes to the church. The church doesn't promote ketamine but it's definitely not a commandment."
"Zac trying ketamine is a pure example of how much he is willing to do to show up for our relationship."
Subscribers see Zac having his arm prepared and injected with the drug while his wife muses it reminds her of times she used to "donate plasma".
Zac quips: "Is it too late to back out now?", as she comments: "Never thought we'd get to this point where we're doing drugs together."
Sat in plush armchairs, adorned with eye masks, earphones and snug blankets, Jen shortly begins to sense the effects, exclaiming that the room is "spinning".
What exactly is ketamine therapy?Ketamine therapy is a treatment that uses small doses of ketamine to deal with a slew of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety maladies and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Medical professionals administer the drug within controlled surroundings to certify patient safety, combining the sessions with psychological counseling.
The Pacific Neuroscience Institute reports that ketamine therapy has "thought to have rapid-acting antidepressant effects with many patients reporting improvements in their symptoms within hours to days after treatment".
Despite lacking FDA endorsement, ketamine is utilised in high doses as anaesthesia in medical facilities and 'off-label' for mental health conditions.
However, the costs are steep; reports indicate that a single ketamine session could lighten wallets by $275 to a daunting $13,300, with exact pricing hinging on various factors like treatment specifics, establishment, insurance cover and geographical situation.
Ketamine therapy is permitted in the United States and is a rapidly growing business but while it is a licensed anesthetic drug in the UK, it isn't licensed for treating depression.
This means that ketamine therapy isn't legally available in the UK.
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is available to watch on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US.
