Thirteen people have reportedly been left injured after a car ploughed through a crowd of people before Espanyol and Barcelona’s La Liga clash.

Shocking footage has emerged of a car driving through a crowd of supporters ahead of Espanyol and Barcelona‘s La Liga clash on Thursday evening.

Hansi Flick‘s side clinched the top-flight title courtesy of a 2-0 win over their Catalan rivals, as Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez fired La Blaugrana to glory at the RCDE Stadium.

However, the game was marred by a horrific incident outside the stadium, as a white vehicle was filmed being surrounded by supporters and police in riot gear before driving through the crowd.

Play was halted for a few minutes while the referee was briefed of the incident by the authorities, and according to BBC Sport as many as 13 people have been left with injuries.

Four victims are said to have been taken to hospital – one with a broken leg – but none is believed to be in a serious condition, and police have confirmed that there was no risk to supporters already inside the stadium.

Catalan police ‘investigating possible loss of control’ as cause of crash

The driver has allegedly been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and causing injury, and ten ambulances were sent to the scene to attend to the wounded, but the president of the Government of Catalonia Salvador Illa said there were no “major incidents” to mention.

A separate report from Spanish outlet Mark claims that the Mossos d’Esquadra – Catalonia’s regional police force – have reason to believe that the incident was accidental.

The authorities are reportedly investigating whether the driver of the car lost control, causing the vehicle to plough through the crowd as they lined up to welcome the Espanyol team bus.

The car was then pictured crashed into a barrier as police in protective gear made their way to the scene, and a full investigation into the harrowing incident will now commence.

The PA announcer inside Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium informed the crowd of the incident, but it was stressed to supporters that there were no serious casualties.
