The Trichy Railway Division has dismantled the 159-year-old Maris Road Over Bridge (RoB), also known as the Fort Station RoB, on Salai Road.

Built in 1866 during British rule and later strengthened in 1971, the bridge was closed in March 2023 after it suffered severe damage, as per TOI.

The bridge, which was last strengthened in 1971, had become unsafe for use. It was located near the famous Rockfort hill and linked Salai Road from Woraiyur to the Main Guard Gate. It spanned the railway tracks between Trichy Fort and Mutharasanallur stations.

More than 100 workers were involved in the round-the-clock clearing of debris after the demolition. The dismantling of the old bridge has now made way for the construction of a modern one.

New Bridge Details and Timeline

The upcoming RoB will be 480 metres long and will feature a two-lane carriageway. The portion above the railway tracks will be completed by October this year. Construction is expected to begin within a week.

Who’s Funding the Project?

The Indian Railways has approved Rs 12 crore for the new bridge, while the Trichy City Corporation is contributing Rs 34.1 crore.

Furthermore, the Trichy Corporation will take charge of building retaining walls, approach roads, and abutments for the new structure.
