Malpe: The Udupi district administration has enforced a four-month ban on tourist entry to St Mary’s Island, a popular destination off the Malpe coast. The ban comes into effect from May 16 and will remain in force until September 15. Additionally, all water sports activities at the island have been suspended.
Seasonal restrictions are imposed every year due to the high tidal activity and rough sea conditions during the monsoon season. Authorities have reiterated that boat operations along the West Coast are not permitted during the rainy season as per Harbour Craft regulations.
Demand for limited extension denied
Owing to the summer holiday rush, a large number of tourists have been visiting the island. Requests had been made to allow boat services and water adventure activities for a few more days. However, officials have not relaxed the enforcement.
Beach access till June 1
According to tourism department officials, although island access is banned from May 16, visitors may be allowed into the shallow waters near the beach till June 1, depending on weather conditions. Protective barricades will be set up along the beachline after that, said Deputy Director of Tourism Chandrashekhar.
