One home cook has shared their simple tip for making porridge taste better and giving it a nicer texture and it's a simple step to add before cooking it. Porridge is a staple British breakfast and it is a favourite for many because it is easy to make and it doesn't cost much. There are many ways to make your porridge taste delicious, such as . However, there is one step you can take that improves the flavour and texture and it's so simple.

One TikTok user, Trace Alexander, shared his porridge tip with his followers and he shows the one step he uses to improve the popular dish. In the viral post, he says that oatmeal, which is what Americans call porridge, can "taste a lot better than you think". He reveals: "Throughout the years, I've gotten countless of people saying oatmeal tastes nasty. Fair point, if you don't know how to make it correctly."

Alexander, who calls himself "the oatmeal guy", shared his simple porridge recipe and he does something very important before he heats it up. He reveals that it is important to soak your oats for a few minutes before you decide to cook them.

He adds his oats to a bowl followed by water and lets it sit for five minutes "to allow the liquid to absorb before cooking". He explains: "This way, the oats are already softened up."

He added: "The type of oats can also change the texture. For a more mushy texture I'd go for instant or quick cooking oats."

While many Brits opt for milk when they are making porridge, whether it's on the stove or in the microwave, some people prefer to use water. One person, who was named the World Porridge Champion in 2023, says he and then tops it with butter and brown sugar.

However, Alexander's method also works if you would prefer to use milk.

The creator recieved hundreds of comments underneath his video with many people sharing their thoughts on his method for making porridge. One person said: "Why is bro using water and not milk?"

Another commented: "I do 1 cup oats, 1 cup milk, 1 cup water. Combine in a pan on a stove and heat on medium high while stirring it constantly. When it starts to buble or you get the consistency you wish take off heat."

A third shared: "Use a pan over the stove. Microwave just feels wrong."
