The Department of School Education and Literacy has issued a clear statement confirming that the summer holidays for schoolchildren in Karnataka will conclude on May 28, and the 2025–26 academic year will officially begin on May 29. This clarification comes in the wake of widespread misinformation circulating on social media regarding an extension of summer vacation.
In recent days, messages falsely claiming that summer holidays have been extended till July 15 across all states and education boards—including the state syllabus, CBSE, and ICSE—have been widely shared on platforms like WhatsApp groups of parents and teachers, causing confusion among stakeholders.
Officials have clarified that while some states have extended holidays due to extreme weather conditions, there is no change in Karnataka’s academic calendar. “As per the previously issued notification, schools in Karnataka will reopen on May 29 without any alterations,” stated DDPI K. Ganapathi.
The department has already released the schedule for the academic year, which applies to all government, aided, and unaided schools following the state syllabus. CBSE and ICSE institutions will continue to follow their respective timetables.
Key Academic Year Details:
123 holidays (including mid-term, Dasara, and summer vacations)
242 academic working days
Instructions to Schools:
All teachers and headmasters must report to duty on May 29.
School inauguration celebrations should be held on May 30.
A school enrollment drive must be organized during the first week of June, where staff will visit homes to identify out-of-school children or those who have dropped out midway and facilitate their enrollment.
The education department has urged parents and school communities not to believe or spread false messages and to rely only on official communications.
