The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to commence trial runs for two tunnels that will connect the Dwarka Expressway with the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway. This development is promising news for those commuting along the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
According to highway officials, this new route will facilitate smoother travel from Dwarka to Gurugram, eliminating the need to navigate through Mahipalpur. NHAI representatives have indicated that the tunnels will be operational for limited hours each day to assess traffic conditions.
An official was quoted as saying, 'The trials aim to evaluate vehicle movement and traffic density, as well as to determine if any adjustments are necessary. This assessment will take place over several days to analyze traffic patterns and implement any required changes.'
Experts anticipate that the trials for the entire network will conclude by the end of this month, with the potential for the tunnels to be opened to traffic in June. The tunnel connecting Dwarka to IGI Airport consists of two segments: a primary 3.6 km eight-lane section and a 1.5 km two-lane segment that will channel traffic from the Dwarka Expressway to the Delhi-Jaipur Highway.
A senior official noted, 'Construction on the tunnel linking the main tunnel to IGI Airport is still ongoing and is expected to be completed within the next week to ten days. While this work is finalized, trials on the Dwarka to Gurugram section will proceed.'
This project is part of the fourth package of the 29 km Dwarka Expressway, which connects Mahipalpur to Kherki Daula in Gurugram. The expressway was constructed on a single pillar and cost approximately 9,000 crore rupees, spanning 18.9 km in Haryana and 10.1 km in Delhi.
According to NHAI officials, 'The opening of traffic on this fourth package will significantly alleviate congestion at Mahipalpur, as thousands of vehicles currently travel from Dwarka to Gurugram via this route. Once the entire tunnel system is operational, traffic congestion between Mahipalpur and the Sirhaul toll plaza in Gurugram will be greatly reduced.'
Following the completion of trials on the IGI Airport side, officials plan to conduct trials for traffic flow from Gurugram to the Dwarka Expressway and subsequently from the Dwarka Expressway to the airport and back.
