Superdrug is set to close one of its stores this summer. The health and retailer will close its shop in Grantham in Lincolnshire on August 9.

, which has more than 800 UK stores, has not confirmed why the store is closing - but shoppers have been reacting to the news on social media.

One shopper shared the news on , writing: “Heard the sad news today that Superdrug will be closing down. Been in Grantham for over 40 years. This town is dying.”

Another shopper replied, saying: “It’s happening everywhere everyone is buying online there won’t be any towns left soon. It a shame but most of us do it.“

A third person added: “Be empty shops everywhere soon.“ And a fourth person said: “So sad Grantham will have nothing soon.“

A spokesperson from Superdrug said: “This branch will continue to trade until this date. All team members will be supported during this process and individually consulted regarding potential opportunities within the business.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this closure may cause and sincerely thank our customers for their continued support.”

It comes after Grantham also lost its Select store on May 10. The fashion retailer announced the news on Facebook, with a post that read: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell all our lovely customers that our store will be closing.

"As far as we are aware our last trading day is May 10. I just want to take a minute to say thank you for all your support over the years."

Meanwhile, a department store chain is closing down its last remaining store at the end of this month after more than 140 years on the high street.

Beales will shut its store in the Dolphin Centre in Poole on May 31 and is now offering up to 80% as part of a closing down sale. Beales was founded in Bournemouth in 1881 but collapsed into administration in 2020.

Stationery chain Smiggle is set to close its branch in Inverness, on May 21. The store is located in the Eastgate Shopping Centre and is being shut down because the lease has expired.

chain Geek Retreat has also announced it was shutting its Bristol branch in order to focus on its Newport store. Geek Retreat opened its first store in Glasgow in 2013 and had as many as 57 outlets in its heyday.

Geek Retreat manager Liam said: “After a lot of thought, I’ve made the tough decision to close the Bristol store. When I took on both Bristol and Newport, I genuinely believed I could give both sites the time and attention they deserved – even with 30 miles between them."
