Mangaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for May 20 and 21 in coastal Karnataka due to the possibility of intense pre-monsoon rainfall. Heavy rain accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds is expected in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Rainfall has already intensified in several parts of the region since Monday afternoon.
IMD also issued an orange alert for the districts for May 19.
In response to the forecast, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has initiated precautionary measures. Parents have been advised to ensure children do not visit low-lying areas, lakes, riverbanks, or seashores. All officials at the district and taluk levels have been instructed to remain at their respective headquarters and manage disaster response operations without fail.
Incident Commanders deployed in various areas have been asked to stay alert and respond immediately to public grievances while maintaining constant communication with the District Control Room.
Fishermen have been strictly warned not to venture into the sea, and those already at sea have been advised to return to the shore immediately.
Tourists and the general public have also been asked to avoid visiting riverbanks and beaches during this period.
All line departments have been directed to open control rooms in every taluk and stay on high alert, instructed Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan.
