Mumbai The multi-hyphenate Bollywood star Karan Johar is reflecting on his time at the Cannes Film Festival. The director recently discussed his past at the Cannes Film Festival at a special event held at the Bharat Pavilion.
He spoke about his first trip to the Cannes Film Festival with his father, Yash Johar, and how their film, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which brought them $5,000 at the Cannes Film Market, gave them a head start at the esteemed event.
“I have a lot of emotional memories related to Cannes,” said Karan, whose work “Homebound” was chosen for the Un Certain Regard section of the festival. I recall being here at the Cannes market with my father in 2002.
KJo recalled his father making a bargain, which he believed to be much less at the time. “This seems like it’s really not of any consequence,” I informed him. Because I recall that he received $5,000 for the European rights to Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. “$5,000, isn’t that very little?” I thought at the time. “Look, it’s a start; we have to see it,” he said. And regrettably, he was not there to see the enormous influence that our film, which started with “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,” had on all of Shah Rukh Khan’s productions,” he said.
KJo said that the action sparked a significant cultural movement for European film. He recalled that it started in 2002, the year that “Devdas” had a stunning premiere and Shah Rukh and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walked the red carpet. And the real queen of Cannes is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. She generates so much enthusiasm and media intensity whenever she’s here, for example. And here she is once again. it I remember it so well is simply fantastic.
Today, the Cannes Film Festival’s Bharat Pavilion hosted a number of fascinating film-related seminars. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, sponsored the Bharat Pavilion, which was organized by NFDC and FICCI.
After that, I returned to my role as a filmmaker when Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Divakar Banerjee, and I were chosen for the director’s week in 2013 for the anthology Bombay Talkies. And I got to know Guneet Monga in that specific year. Additionally, I watched “The Lunchbox,” which was really doing very well and receiving a lot of affection. And I made the decision to show the movie to Indian viewers in Hindi. I thus have a lot of wonderful recollections,” he said.
