Old generation driving enthusiasts still like manual cars because they believe that it give them full control over the car. But automatic cars have become more popular among the new generation of car buyers. Nowadays, many types of automatic transmission technologies are available in the market, one of which is AMT, i.e., Automatic Manual Transmission.
AMT cars are very beneficial for those who get tired of pressing the clutch and changing gears daily in city traffic. The special thing is that AMT also gives you the ease of automatic along with manual gear control.
But when it comes to driving on mountains, many people are a little hesitant about AMT cars. They believe that the transmission system of AMT cars is not that reliable on mountain roads because the driver does not have full control. But the truth is that if the right methods are adopted, then AMT cars can be driven easily and safely even on mountains.
If you are also thinking of going on a trip to the mountains in your AMT car, then definitely follow some important tips given below.
Use manual mode
Manual mode is even more beneficial while descending. If you depend only on the brakes, the brake pads can heat up quickly, and there can be a risk of brake failure. In such a situation, down the gear and use engine braking so that the load on the brake is reduced.
Take advantage of the creep function.
Many AMT cars do not have Hill Hold Control (HHC), but there is another great feature called the creep function. The advantage of this is that as soon as you release the brake, the car moves forward slowly without pressing the accelerator.
This feature is helpful in traffic, but it is also very useful while climbing mountains because it does not make the car roll back.
Use the parking brake correctly.
If you are stopping the vehicle on a hill, then definitely apply the parking brake. AMT cars with a fully automatic transmission do not have P mode. Therefore, only the parking brake can prevent the vehicle from rolling.
If you are still not confident, then you can make it safer by placing a brick or a piece of wood behind the vehicle.
Drive slowly but steadily.
The most important rule of driving on hills is to drive slowly but steadily. Because hill roads are often narrow, have sharp turns, sudden ascents or descents, and sometimes blind spots.
If you accelerate too fast or brake suddenly, it can be dangerous for you as well as others. So always drive smoothly and keep the speed under control.
