Parents have been urged to look out for signs of in babies which can be easily mistaken for other health issues like a common cold. Google trends data shows a recent uptick in searchers about signs of hay fever in babies or how to ease symptoms, according to Weldricks Pharmacy.

Registered pharmacist and hay fever expert Allan Green said: "Allergy symptoms in babies and young children can often be mistaken for the common cold, but parents and caregivers should be vigilant - especially during high periods - to spot signs of hay fever. Babies and young children can't always communicate how they're feeling."

Mr Green recommended looking out for the following symptoms:

  • Sneezing
  • Itchy or watery eyes
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Sore throat or coughing
  • General irritability.

Less obvious symptoms can include pressure around the temples, loss of sense of smell and facial pain from blocked sinuses.

Hay fever is less common in very young children but can occur. Untreated hay fever can increase risk of health conditions such as later in life.

Mr Green added: "There are many affordable hay fever treatment options available for your little ones, including antihistamine (from age 2+), eye drops and nasal sprays that are suitable for children.

"Additionally, simple actions like keeping windows closed during peak pollen times, regularly washing bedding and changing clothes after being outside can also help reduce their exposure naturally.

"If you're a worried parent, we recommend keeping a diary of symptoms.

"This can help you pinpoint exactly which pollen, as there are many, your children are allergic to and get the correct treatment fast."

The pollen forecast shows low levels across the UK this week.
