The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) remains at the forefront of India's marine conservation efforts, reinforcing its commitment under ‘Operation Olivia’—a dedicated mission protecting the endangered Olive Ridley Turtles and preserving the nation’s rich maritime ecosystem.

India’s eastern coastline, particularly Gahirmatha Beach, Odisha, serves as a vital nesting ground for Olive Ridley Turtles, with over 800,000 turtles arriving annually. Threatened by illegal fishing, net entanglement, and habitat degradation, these species rely on ICG’s vigilant enforcement and rescue operations to ensure their survival.

To protect these essential species, the Indian Coast Guard conducts ‘Operation Olivia’- annually from November to May every year, the operation ensures safe nesting conditions during the breeding season.:

Under Operation Olivia, since inception, Indian Coast Guard has demonstrated relentless commitment to marine conservation, executing an extensive 5,387 surface patrol sorties and 1,768 aerial surveillance missions, ensuring vigilant protection of Olive Ridley Turtles along India’s eastern coastline. Additionally, 366 boats engaged in illegal fishing activities have been detained, during Ops Olivia, reinforcing sustainable maritime practices.

Beyond enforcement, the ICG actively engages in community outreach, fostering sustainable fishing practices by promoting Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) and collaborating with NGOs through formal MoUs for coordinated conservation efforts. These efforts not only safeguard endangered species but also preserve India’s rich marine biodiversity, underscoring ICG’s unwavering dedication to protecting the oceans. Encouragingly, in February 2025, a record 698,718 Olive Ridley turtles nested at the Rushikulya river mouth in Odisha—surpassing previous records. This milestone underscores the effectiveness of sustained conservation efforts and reaffirms the need for continued monitoring and adaptive strategies to support long-term marine sustainability.

The Indian Coast Guard remains steadfast in its commitment to marine conservation, upholding its motto: “VAYAM RAKSHAMAH” – “WE PROTECT.”
