With the summer season almost upon us, many of us will be dusting off our suitcases and sunglasses in preparation for jetting off somewhere warm and sunny. However, is warning to do one check before going abroad, and if they don't, they could risk being turned away at the airport.

Not being allowed on your flight is every traveler's worst nightmare and if you don't for some key elements then you risk this nightmare becoming your reality. The Money Saving Expert says he is hearing more and more stories of "people not being allowed to get on flights or being turned back at border control".

There are two checks you should make to ensure your passport is valid but even if you do pass them, if "you're not far from failing, with seemingly increased border control rigidity, it may be safer to sort a new passport", warns Mr Lewis.

One rule depends on the issue date of your passport, the other the expiry date, post-Brexit rules mean many people could be caught out.

The Government negotiated on our behalf to become third-country nationals after the democratic vote to leave the EU, therefore existing rules come into play.

Mr Lewis is urging people to check there is at least six months left on your passport, three months for the EU, and to make sure your passport isn't more than 10 years old.

People can be turned away from their holiday if their passport was issued more than 10 years ago.

If you said no to either of the rules then you should check your country-by-country UK passport rules to ensure you won't be sent back.

The Passport Office says you should allow "up to three weeks" to renew.

Research by Confused.com reveals that 1 in 20 (5%) of Brits have had to miss, cancel or postpone their travels due to an expired passport.
