Television favourite Michael McStay has sadly passed away at the age of 92, with his relatives confirming the news. Renowned for memorable stints in Coronation Street and Doctor Who, the beloved actor succumbed to heart failure, as revealed by a heartfelt statement from those dear to him.

The statement by the actor's agent read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Michael McStay, an actor of the highest standing and talented writer, whose career across stage, screen and radio spanned over six decades."

Michael is said to have died serenely in his sleep after a convivial lunch with his offspring.

In his acclaimed acting journey, Michael last graced our screens as Alan Hoyle on the fabled Corrie streets, stepping into the role originally played by John Woodvine in 2011.

His final appearance allowed him the joy of reuniting with close friend and fellow actor Johnny Briggs (Alec Baldwin). Michael's extensive repertoire extended beyond his Corrie days, encompassing roles in No Hiding Place, Doctor Who, Blunt, and Thatcher: The Final Days, as well as building a notable filmography which included Peter Yates' Robbery.

Social media users on platforms like Twitter were quick to share their grief and praise for the late icon. One bereft user posted: "Sad to see that Michael McStay has passed away."

They fondly remembered his contribution to Coronation Street: "Absolutely adored him in Corrie as Alan Hoyle in the John Stape storyline. Both him and the late Jean Fergusson were brilliant in the basement episodes."

Another fan expressed their sorrow with two sad emojis, saying: "Michael McStay took over as Alan Hoyle from John Woodvine on Coronation Street. Stuart, I am sorry to hear of his death."

One fan fondly remembered him, writing: "For me, Michael McStay will always be scientist Derek Moberley in the Doctor Who story 'The Seeds of Doom' (1975) opposite Tom Baker."

In addition to his impressive tally of over 60 screen credits, Michael also penned several plays for BBC Radio 4 and wrote the popular 1984 ITV comedy Pull the Other One. He also lent his voice to numerous audiobooks and featured in many radio dramas.

During an appearance on Toby Hadoke's Happy Times and Places Podcast, Michael reflected on his career, stating he "wouldn't swap for all the success in the world".

He also paid homage to his family during the interview. Michael is survived by his wife - actress Jennifer Clulow - and their two sons Darius and Paul.

He tied the knot with Jennifer in 1967, who is renowned for her roles in The Avengers, Keeping Up Appearances, and No Hiding Place.
