New Protocol Guidelines for Chief Justice's Visits

The Maharashtra government has issued official protocol guidelines to ensure adherence during the Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai's visits to Mumbai and other regions of the state.

A statement released by the state government on Tuesday indicated that CJI Gavai has now been formally designated as a permanent state guest in Maharashtra.

The guidelines reference the rules for state guests; however, the state faced embarrassment on Sunday when the Chief Justice expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of key officials, such as the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, or the Mumbai Police Commissioner, during his first visit to the state after taking office.

CJI Gavai took his oath on May 14 and was in Mumbai for a ceremonial event. According to the Maharashtra State Guest Rules of 2004, individuals listed as state guests are to be welcomed and bid farewell by the state protocol sub-division at airports. At the district level, similar arrangements are coordinated through designated protocol officers from the District Collector's office.
