Chief Justice of India BR Gavai expressed displeasure over lawyers not being willing to work during summer vacations. The bench of CJI and Justice George Christ expressed displeasure over the request of a lawyer and said that it is the lawyers and not the judges who are not willing to work during vacations and the judiciary is blamed for the pending cases.
Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Wednesday expressed displeasure over lawyers not wanting to work during holidays and said the judiciary is the only one to be blamed for the backlog of cases in courts.
Why did the CJI get angry?Actually, a lawyer had requested to list the petition after the summer vacation. On this, the bench of CJI BR Gavai and Justice George Masih expressed displeasure.
"Five judges are sitting and continuing to work during vacations, yet we are blamed for the pending cases. In reality, it is the lawyers who are not willing to work during vacations," the CJI said.
'Partial court working days'Recently, the Supreme Court has issued a notification on the benches that will function during the upcoming summer vacation, which has been designated as 'partial court working days' from May 26 to July 13.
Two to five vacation benches will sit during the partial court working day and the top five judges including the Chief Justice of India will also run the courts during this period. As per the earlier practice, there used to be only two vacation benches during summer vacations.
The notification outlines the weekly allocation of judges to benches. From May 26 to June 1, CJI BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath, JK Maheshwari and BV Nagarathna will head the five benches respectively.
During this period, the Supreme Court Registry will remain open for all officers and employees from 10 AM to 5 PM. The Registry will remain closed on all Saturdays (except July 12), Sundays and public holidays.
