's interrupted it's programming to share some breaking news about the economy. Presenter Susanna Reid told viewers inflation has sharply increased. "Our breaking news this morning - official figures have shown UK inflation jumped to its highest level for more than a year. Last month, figures released just in the last few minutes, show inflation increased to 3.5% in April, and that is up sharply from 2.6% in March," she said. "That surge follows a rise in the energy price cap as well as higher council tax and higher water bills," added.

They then cut to Jonathan Swain who was in a greengrocers in Twickenham, where he explained the cost of vegetables has steadily risen. "People are going shopping over you'll feel it and see it. The prices have been going up steadily. There's a lot of inflation in the system...Fruit and veg has being increasing over the past couple of years," he said.

Showing a chart demonstarting the increases he siad: "Let's see what it's done over the past couple of years, shall we?

"Because in May 2023, way back then it was well over 8.5%, but then last month it had fallen to 2.6% much nearer the Bank of England's 2% target.

But figures, as we've heard, have just been released, it has gone up to 3.5%. That is higher than what was expected, and that's due, we think, to the rise in energy bills.

"That's because the price cap increased to 6.4%In April. Those bills came through our doormats all those statements in our inboxes, so that is now having a big impact on the cost of living," he explained.

, up from 2.6% in March and the highest since January 2024.

Economists had been expecting a rise to 3.3% last month. It comes after 's energy price cap rose by 6.4% in April, having fallen a year earlier alongside a raft of bill rises for under-pressure households, including steep increases to water charges, council tax, mobile and broadband tariffs.

ONS acting director-general Grant Fitzner said: "Significant increases in household bills caused inflation to climb steeply.Gas and electricity bills rose this month compared with sharp falls at the same time last year due to changes to the Ofgem energy price cap.

"Water and sewerage bills also rose strongly this year, as did vehicle excise duty, which all pushed the headline rate up to its highest level since the beginning of last year."
