The government has opened a new four-lane flyover at Bhayanderpada junction along Ghodbunder Road in Thane for the public use recently.
New Bhayanderpada Flyover – A 25 Minutes Quick Way For Mumbai-Thane
Considering its location, this four lane flyover is built to tackle increasing traffic congestion as it is expected to cut down travel time between Thane and Mumbai by 15 to 25 minutes.
This Wednesday, the flyover was inaugurated by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, with Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) also present at the ceremony, as mentioned in the media report.
This is just the start as this solution is part of a larger multi-layered traffic solution which is designed to handle the heavy traffic in the Thane region.
In this structure, they have integrated the ground-level Ghodbunder Road, an elevated corridor, and the upcoming Metro Line 4 viaduct, hence making it the first such design in the area.
Usually, city-bound traffic uses underpasses and slip roads, its elevated section is dedicated to outbound vehicles further helping in removing the traffic signals from the junction, allowing for smoother movement.
They are expecting that this flyover will significantly improve the traffic flow not only within Thane region but also towards key locations such as Vasai-Virar, Bhiwandi, Gujarat, Nashik, Navi Mumbai, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port.
It will help in reinforcing Thane’s position as an important transit hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Besides this they are expecting that the locals from nearby areas such as Gaimukh, Kasarvadavali, Brahmand, and Bhayanderpada would also witness a quicker and more convenient commute.
Development of A Safer, More Efficient, and Fully Integrated Transport System
This entire flyover measures 601 metres in length with the Thane-side ramp is 391.48 metres long, accompanied by a 20.4-metre underpass and the Borivali side ramp extends for 189.88 metres.
The dual two-lane carriageways, each 7.5 metres wide, is also included in this structure.
In addition to this, it features underpasses for city traffic and a pedestrian subway for safe crossing, easing the load on surface roads.
This corridor is designed to support both light and heavy vehicles, improving freight and passenger movement across the city to handle a capacity of 73,333 Passenger Car Units (PCUs).
It is built over the viaduct of Metro Lines 4 and 4A as eventually they plan to connect Wadala to Gaimukh via Kasarvadavali.
They also plan to link these metro lines to the Dahisar corridor as confirmed by the Deputy CM Shinde.
Following the discussions with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, they will commence with the land acquisition for the connection.
This new flyover not only eases traffic but also boosts regional economic activity, said Sanjay Mukherjee, MMRDA Commissioner.
All in all, this is part of a wider plan to develop a safer, more efficient, and fully integrated transport system across the rapidly growing MMR.
