Satyajit Ray and his classics have been consistently serving glory for Indian cinema for ages. The 1970-release Aranyer Din Ratri was recently premiered at the Cannes Classics at Cannes Film Festival in its restored version. The cast Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal graced the special screening, accompanied by Film Heritage Foundation chief Shivendra Singh Dungarpur.
Saba Ali Khan, daughter of Sharmila Tagore, who was among the audience posted a series of pictures and videos from the event’s evening. Post the premiere, the audience gave a standing ovation. Meanwhile, Sharmila was escorted to the centre of the projection stage amidst the warm applause.
Saba shared the video and wrote, “A little more ….of moments. Standing ovation. A beautiful celebration of life. Team that made it all possible. Congratulations!”
In a second picture, the actor spoke about the film, with Simi Garewal standing next to her. Saba and Sharmila even smiled for the camera with filmmaker Wes Anderson.
Wes has been a great fan of Ray, and introduced the film before the screening. Aranyer Din Ratri is presented and restored by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project at L’Immagine Ritrovata in association with the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection. The funding was initiated by the Golden Globe Foundation.
The film featured Soumitra Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, Robi Ghosh, and Aparna Sen. It tells the story of four city men who finds an escapade to the forests of Palamau (now in Jharkhand) but ventures on the path to self-discovery.
