Drivers on the M1 are facing travel chaos after a serious crash closed the motorway.

The closure is in place on the northbound carriageway between junctions 46 and 47, with emergency services at the scene.

Highways England warned the road will be shut for hours.

A spokesperson said: "The M1 in West Yorkshire is closed northbound between J46 and J47 near Leeds due to a serious collision.

"West Yorkshire emergency services are in attendance.

"The carriageway is expected to remain closed for a number of hours for collision investigations to be carried out. Road users are advised to expect disruption and to allow extra journey time."
