New Delhi: A fresh wave of controversy has been ignited following the release of the lyrical video Sugar Baby from Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film Thug Life. Trisha Krishnan’s appearance in the song and her onscreen pairing with Kamal Haasan have prompted divided reactions.
A major point is the noticeable 30-year age gap between the two stars. The moment the film’s trailer was unveiled, eyebrows were raised at the romantic sequences between Kamal and Trisha. A brief kissing scene featured in the footage has triggered widespread discussions across social media.
Fans online have expressed discomfort and questioned the narrative’s choice of romantic pairing. The criticism intensified with the release of Sugar Baby, in which Trisha appears in a white saree, performing confidently during a wedding celebration.
Online audiences have questioned the tone and implications of the song, even speculating whether Kamal Haasan or Silambarasan TR is meant to be the titular “sugar daddy”. Brief glimpses of Trisha’s scenes with Kamal, along with action shots of Silambarasan TR, have further muddied the interpretation.
Sugar Baby has been composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics by Siva Ananth. The vibrant track features vocals by Alexandra Joy, Shuba, and Sarath Santhosh, while the rap segment is performed by Shuba. Music supervision has been handled by Nakul Abhyankar and Prashanth Venkat. Set during a wedding celebration, the song also includes appearances by Sanya Malhotra, Kamal Haasan, and STR.
Addressing the backlash, Trisha has expressed calmness and confidence in her choice. “I think that’s something I knew when they announced the film, and I had not even signed it. So that’s when I knew, wow, this is magic. And I was not even part of the film at that point in time,” she said.
Speaking about her experience working under Mani Ratnam’s direction alongside Kamal Haasan, Trisha added, “So all of us as actors, we were like, oh damn, we have to do some work here. We’ve got to stop staring at them. So it was magic.”
