Annie Murphy, famed for her role in Schitt's Creek, has joined forces with Nicole Kidman for the hotly tipped second season of Nine Perfect Strangers.

The firts two episodes of Nine Perfect Strangers' new season premiered on Wednesday, May 21 on stateside, and arrived on in the UK a day later on Thursday, May 22.

Masha Dmitrichenko's wellness retreat this time around includes newcomer Imogen, portrayed by Annie Murphy, who seeks to mend her strained relationship with her mum Victoria, enacted by Christine Baranski.

With the drama now airing every week, fans are keen to know all there is about actress Annie Murphy.

Heritage

Murphy may be best known for the Canadian sitcom Schitt's Creek but she does have "Irish roots" as she told RTE Entertainment.

The star, whose parents both worked as teachers, explained: "They're not as immediate as I would like, but my great-grandfather's from Ireland and my dad, Frank Murphy, is a very proud Irishman, even though it was his grandfather so yeah, it's in the blood."

When asked if she has been to Ireland, she replied: "I have. My family are from County Carlow, and so I went over with my folks a little while ago and we did a whole tour of where all my ancestors were.

"I want to come back so badly - it's so beautiful over there."

Famous husband

Murphy prides herself on her marriage to musical talent Menno Versteeg, who was a member of the band Hollerado, who released their debut album in 2009.

After the band split, the guitarist and singer joined a new group called Anyway Gang.

The details of how Murphy and Versteeg first crossed paths remain unclear, but according to Elle, she was a "struggling actress" in the early days of the band's career, travelling with them, performing on stage and contributing to songwriting.

In return, when she landed a role in Schitt's Creek, he composed the melody for her character's song A Little Bit Alexis, featured in the fifth season.

The pair exchanged vows in 2011 and currently do not have any children together.

House fire

Two years into their marriage, tragedy struck as a fire ravaged their downtown Toronto flat.

Fortunately, they escaped unscathed, but Murphy described this period as "quite bleak" during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

She revealed: "My house had just burned down. I had, like, $3 in my bank account. I hadn't worked in close to two years, and I had just blown my very first screen test. Like, blown it, blown it, blown it, blown it.

"I found myself crying in the Pacific Ocean, a very snotty cry.

"And the universe was like, 'Don't do this anymore. This is not for you.'

"But then two days later I got the audition for Schitt's Creek."

Post-Schitt's Creek, Murphy has starred in Kevin Can F*** Himself, Russian Doll, Crank Yankers and the 2023 episode of Black Mirror titled Joan Is Awful.

Depression

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic was difficult for Murphy, as the crisis struck just when she was due to begin shooting Kevin Can F*** Himself, spiralling her into depression as she journeyed back to Canada.

Opening up to The Zoe Report, Murphy shared: "My mom was like, 'You're crying 12 times a day hysterically, to the point where your teeth are chattering. That's not normal.'

"I was like, 'Damn it, I'm depressed.'

"A lot of people are going to think that I sound like I'm playing a tiny violin for myself.

"'Oh, you're rich and famous. Why the f--- are you sad? You have nothing to be sad about.'

"But I'm not going to post photos of me covered in my own snot, lying on the floor, unable to get up. I don't want people to have to see that."

Turning a corner, the actress credited antidepressants and regular therapy sessions for her comeback.

"And now," she added with a laugh, "Now, honestly, if a friend's like, 'I'm having a really hard time,' I'm like, 'Get on drugs. Get on drugs!'

"You don't have to be on drugs for the whole time."

Schitt's Creek film hopes

The Schitt's Creek star is hoping for a potential movie reunion with her former castmates, despite the show wrapping up in 2020.

With no official confirmation in sight, Murphy shared a playful anecdote with Us Weekly about her attempts to nudge Dan Levy, who portrayed David Rose and also served as a writer.

She said: "I mean, I've been sending Dan $5 a day in the mail as a bribe. So far, I have not heard back about a movie officially.

"But, oh, my God, I would be just over the moon if that ever came to pass because I miss everyone so much every day.

"Just to see Moira again, I would pay a lot of money to do that."

Nine Perfect Strangers season 2 is available to watch on Hulu in the US and Prime Video in the UK.
