Read, Digital Desk : Award-winning poet and lyricist Gulzar was conferred with the 58th Jnanpith Award at his residence in Bandra, Mumbai on Thursday. The award ceremony was held in New Delhi, which due to health complications the 90-year old was unable to attend.
Accompanied by other members of Bharatiya Jnanpith, Trustee Mudit Jain, former secretary Dharmpal and General Manager R.N. Tewari personally went to the residence to hand him the award. Along with the honour goes a citation plaque, bronze replica of Goddess Vagdevi Saraswati and eleven lakh rupees.
Remarkable art and literature award
Gulzar became the recipient of the prestigious award in the presence of family and friends. Close family members such as his son-in-law Govind Sandhu and other notable literary personalities like filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj and singer Rekha Bhardwaj were also present.
Tewari shared, “We were at his residence at noon to present the award. The ceremony was simple but filled with emotion.”
Gulzar is an acclaimed personality of Hindi and Urdu literature, as well as Indian cinema. His impact on poetry, lyrics and screenplays throughout the years is remarkable.

About the Jnanpith Award
In 1961, Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain and Rama Jain Establed the JNANPITH Award for Exceptional Contributions in Indian Literature Across Multiple Languages. It has been awarded to Several Luminaries Including Firaq Gorakhpuri, Mahadevi Varma, Girish Karnad, and Damodar Mauzo.
