WTC Final, Australia vs. South Africa: Although the Indian team did not make it to the World Test Championship final, former pacer Javagal Srinath will serve as the match referee and make sure the nation is present in the upcoming high-profile match. Nitin Menon, a WTC rookie, will serve as the fourth umpire.
The on-field umpires for the WTC final at Lord’s will be Chris Gaffaney of New Zealand and Richard Illingworth of England.
From June 11 to 15, the venerable location will host the mace match between reigning champions Australia and first-time finalists South Africa.
After officiating the first WTC 2021 final between India and New Zealand, Richard Kettleborough, an Englishman, was named the TV umpire. Kettleborough has officiated the finals of various high-profile ICC tournaments, like the Men’s World Cup and the Champions Trophy.
After serving as the TV umpire for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final, Menon has been selected as the fourth umpire for the match. Having served as an on-field umpire for all three WTC finals, Illingworth will be creating history in the final Test.
In the first two WTC cycles, India advanced to the finals but lost to Australia and New Zealand, respectively, at the very last second.
Jay Shah, the chairman of the ICC, expressed confidence in the chosen officials’ work and praised their expertise and competence.
“We are pleased to announce an experienced team of match officials for the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s, marking the culmination of a highly competitive two-year cycle of Test matches played around the world,” Shah said in a statement from the ICC.
“We make an effort to choose the most worthy and competent referees for every game, and we have no doubt that they will do a fantastic job. I hope they enjoy their task and wish them the best on behalf of the ICC.
Illingworth maintains his regular appearance in high-profile Test matches. He was also a member of the officiating staff for the 2021 and 2023 finals. After winning the David Shepherd Trophy for the fourth time in 2024, he is now the ICC Umpire of the Year.
In addition to officiating the WTC 2023 final between India and Australia, Gaffaney and Illingworth co-officiated the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final the previous year.
