Ever since US President Donald Trump came to power, some changes have been happening in every field and now the Trump administration has banned the admission of foreign students to Harvard University, that is, now foreign students will not be able to get admission in this university. This decision of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of the Trump administration, taken last Thursday, will affect about 6,800 foreign students, who are currently studying at Harvard University. These also include 788 students from India. During the academic year 2024-2025, there were a total of 6,793 foreign students at Harvard University, which is about 27 percent of the total students studying here.

According to reports, to regain the eligibility to give admission to foreign students, Harvard University will have to give information about the existing foreign students to the US government within 72 hours. At present, all the foreign students studying in this university have been asked to transfer to other universities and colleges and if they do not do so, they may have to leave the country (America).

Why did the US government cancel the eligibility for admission?

In fact, for the last few days, there has been a tussle between the US government and Harvard University regarding the records related to foreign students. The Department of Homeland Security had given a strict warning last month that if the university did not provide the record of illegal and violent cases of foreign students by April 30, then their SEVP i.e. Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification would be canceled. After this, the university had given the record of foreign students, but the Trump administration did not seem satisfied with it.

Why did the Department of Homeland Security come in between?

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) manages the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. It allows colleges to issue visa documents for foreign students, that is, the Department of Homeland Security completely interferes in this matter. If it cancels this program, it simply means that foreign students will not be able to get admission to Harvard University and this will affect Harvard's ability to admit foreign students.
