Gary Lineker once sold his swanky £2.1million bachelor pad at an estimated loss of £400,000 to upgrade to a plush £2.6m family abode with Danielle Bux. The football pundit, who is set to bid farewell to after a 26-year stint this Sunday, has lived in a variety of properties throughout his life.
Originally, had plans to continue presenting fixtures and the 2026 World Cup for the BBC even after announcing in November that he would be quitting MOTD after the 2024/25 season. Yet, following last week's furore , it was confirmed that the broadcaster will cut all ties with the BBC after this weekend's showing. In a heartfelt statement issued on Monday, Lineker said: "Football has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember - both on the pitch and in the studio.
"I care deeply about the game, and about the work I've done with the BBC over many years. As I've said, I would never consciously repost anything anti-semitic - it goes against everything I stand for. However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am.
"Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action." Since then, journalists have persistently been outside Lineker's southwest London home to gauge reaction. But what can be said of the various other properties that Lineker has called home through the years?
Lineker sold his £2.1m bachelor pad at a lossLineker and Michelle Cockayne married in 1986, before welcoming four sons in George, Harry, Tobias, and Angus together. However, two decades later, Michelle sought a divorce from the sports analyst, citing "unreasonable behaviour" - later claiming Lineker had induced her "stress and anxiety".
Following the divorce, Lineker began courting model Danielle Bux, despite a 20-year age difference. The pair wed in 2009, in a lavish Italian wedding ceremony, with Lineker becoming stepdad to Bux's daughter, Ella.
To accommodate his new family, Lineker offloaded his £2.1m bachelor pad, reportedly shouldering a £400,000 shortfall to buy a £2.6m five-bedroom dwelling in Esher, Surrey.
A £2.6m family homeSpeaking on his decision to settle in Surrey, Lineker said that he wanted to put his past behind him and embrace country living, whilst maintaining proximity to his sons. In conversation about his locality in 2011, he said: "Surrey is pretty perfect, after all, wasn't it recently voted the most desirable county in the UK? That says it all right?
"It just came at a time when I moved away from my previous life and was looking for somewhere that wasn't too great a distance from the boys or from London. Esher seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
"We just stumbled upon it and fell in love immediately. It's a stunning part of not just the UK, but the world - gorgeous, lush countryside and picturesque little towns and villages with character, all of their own that you don't find anywhere else."
Nestled a mere 14 miles south of Charing Cross lies the quaint yet affluent district of Esher, famous for its regular feature as one of the priciest areas to live in the UK. For instance, Rightmove claims that the overall average house price over the past year was £980,519.
The bulk of real estate transactions in Esher last year consisted of detached homes, which commanded an impressive average price tag of £1,434,093. Semi-detached properties achieved sales at an average of £947,587, while flats old for around £456,744.
The High Street of Esher is home to several vintage structures, including The Bear public house - an early 19th-century building which was created to accommodate coaches journeying between London and Portsmouth. The historic street is also adorned with eclectic cafes and posh eateries, drawing in droves of visitors. Moreover, Esher Commons offers a haven for nature enthusiasts, eager for rambling, horseback riding, or birdwatching.
The marriage between Lineker and Bux ultimately ended in 2016, leaving it uncertain whether he has retained ownership of the appealing property he acquired in Esher.
A £4m home in BarnesLineker currently lives in the affluent area of Barnes in London, in a property he purchased over a decade ago for £4m. This has been his primary residence where he has brought up his four sons.
The house is equipped with an array of luxurious features including an at-home gym, a spacious kitchen, multiple bedrooms, a cinema room, and a beautiful garden.
