Joe Root, the veteran England batter, has made history by hitting 13,000 runs in Test cricket. The 34-year-old reached this milestone against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge in Nottingham during the only Test match. The match started on May 22, with England batting first. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett got things off to a great start, scoring 124 and 140 runs, respectively. Ollie Pope and Joe Root kept things going strong. On day one, during the third session, Root made history by crossing the 13,000-run mark.
With this achievement, Root became the fastest player to reach this milestone, beating out legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, Ricky Ponting, and Rahul Dravid. Kallis previously held the record, reaching 13,000 runs in 159 Tests, while Root did it in just 153.
In this particular match against Zimbabwe, Root scored 34 runs off 44 balls before being dismissed by Blessing Muzarabani. Even though Root didn’t have the best innings, England was still in a good spot thanks to their strong batting. Ollie Pope also scored a century, marking the first time since 2022 that England’s top three batters all reached centuries in a game.
As England looks ahead to their five-match Test series against India, they’ll aim to build on this performance against Zimbabwe and enter the series with some confidence.
