The future is looking bleak for several with a concerning number predicted to be underwater in 2030. Although the isn't always great, the UK is a great place for beach lovers, as it is home to a diverse range of beaches, from to rugged coastlines.
However, we are at risk of losing some of our most loved holiday destinations as several UK seaside towns, particularly those along the east coast and in the south, are predicted to experience significant coastal flooding and potential submersion by 2030 due to rising sea levels. If the impact of climate change is not curtailed, then in just five years some of our iconic seaside spots could be thrown into jeopardy.
A map courtesy of Climate Central shows the lands projected to be below annual flood level in 2030 and explores sea level rise and coastal flood threats.
The red areas of land are projected to be at risk of flooding in just five years time.
Large swathes of the Lincolnshire and Norfolk coasts are set to be affected alongside parts of Kent, including Faversham and Whitstable.
And London is not safe from rising water levels either. A significant portion of the city is at risk of flooding, with the greatest risk occurring along the River Thames. It's banks are set to be flooded as far as Kingston, west London, with the river swallowing places like Canary Wharf, Greenwich, Lambeth and parts of Westminster.
The map also shows that much of Newport, south Wales will fall victim to rising sea levels if the projections are correct.
Areas around Caerleon and most areas along the banks of the River Usk are also expected to be lost, while Scotland's coastline is largely safe from rising water levels.
Meanwhile, parts of Yorkshire and West Sussex could also be swallowed by rising water levels, along with farmland and popular holiday resorts.
