A Yorkshire pub has been singled out for its "oodles of character" in a new review. The Star Inn at Harome, near Helmsley in Yorkshire, was named by as one of the best "posh pubs" to stay in. Other inns on the list included The Bell at , in Monmouthshire, The Star at , in East Sussex, and The Fox at Oddington, in Gloucestershire.

Jane Knight, editor of the Good Hotel Guide, compiled the list and said: "It's hard to beat a great British pub. There's something ineffably comforting about them, whether they're country establishments with flagstones, beams and crackling fires or bang in the centre of bustling cities."

This list of cosy spots to rest for the night are spread out across the country - but it was Yorkshire's "posh pub" that was singled out for its "oodles" of character by the expert.

Of the Star Inn, Knight said: "After you've spent a day hiking on the North York Moors, the Michelin-starred meal served at this thatched 14th-century inn comes as a welcome feast. The owner, Andrew Pern, has had the Star painstakingly rebuilt after a fire ripped through it in 2021, and there's still oodles of character.

"The farmhouse-chic bedrooms are over the road in the former farm buildings and might feature a roll-top bath at the end of the bed, a piano or even a snooker table. Four more minimalist rooms are in a new barn annexe. Breakfast is served at the round table in an old wheelhouse, with a wooden ceiling, small lounge area and honesty bar."

The pub also boasts strong reviews on TripAdvisor, achieving a rating of 4.5/5 from 1,043 customer reviews.

One satisfied patron said: "Amazing food, surroundings, service/staff and ambience. I couldn't recommend this place more, it's my favourite dining experience by far!"

Another shared: "From the welcome to the goodbye everything was faultless. I would highly recommend the lamb...and everything else on their menu!"

The Star Inn retained its coveted Michelin star in 2025 for the 11th year in a row, and also boasts an AA Rosette Award.

It was also named the country's third-best gastropub in 2022 and came .

Its buildings date from the 14th century and are described as lying "in the heart of God's Own Country", offering 13 bedrooms with a "quirky layout".

In the restaurant, The Star Inn offers "seasonal produce-led menus" inspired by the surrounding Yorkshire countryside.

Its chef and director Stephen Smith was named Yorkshire Life's Chef of the Year in 2023 and has continued to develop menus "maintaining the same sense of terroir and established standards".
