Former Cabinet Minister and presenter is a recognisable face on our television screens. Known for his popular documentaries, including Great British Railway Journeys, the broadcaster swapped politics for presenting and has amassed a dedicated fan base who love to learn more about his private life off-camera. Whilst initially known for his political background, the 71-year-old is now better known for his colourful clothes and love of travel. He is relatively private when it comes to his relationship with his wife, but he revealed in 2022 that he bought a house in Spain when they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.
Michael explained to Express Online how he and his wife, Carolyn Eadie, purchased a property in Carmona, which is located near Seville. The presenter, who has Spanish heritage, later decided to create a TV series all about the area to show fans at home what his home is like.
"Carolyn and I have bought a lovely house near Seville," he told Express Online. "I have a large number of cousins in Spain and I tend to be the organiser of reunions and parties."
Writing a column in The Telegraph in 2023, Michael also elaborated, "Carmona is full of layers of history. In my house, which we're going to visit in the last programme, I discovered Roman mosaics, Visigothic artifacts, and three beautiful Islamic horseshoe arches from pre 1248. This idea of history is everywhere in layers".
Once known as Britain's "most hated Tory", Michael is now more likely to be stopped in the street for his signature style and people tend to ask for selfies with him.
"Younger people greet me, tactfully they think, saying: 'My mother loves you,' or just as frequently, 'My grandfather loves your programme,'" he explained.
Speaking about his favourite attire, he confessed, "My favourite style is wild contrast between jacket and trouser, preferably at opposite extremes of the colour chart, such as purple and yellow.
"I like to tell people that I am colour blind and dress in the dark, but the real reason is that I enjoy doing the unexpected and (I hope) making people laugh."
