‘Right now there’s no room in Test cricket’ – Ajit Agarkar on Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from India squad (Source - BCCI Domestic)

Team India's squad for the upcoming five-match  was announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar on 24 May during a press conference. He read out the names of the 18-member squad, and much to everyone's surprise, Shreyas Iyer was not included in the team. Young top-order batter Shubman Gill was announced as the new captain, with Rishabh Pant named as his deputy.

During the press conference, Agarkar was asked about Iyer and the reason behind his exclusion, to which he said that "there's no room for the player in Test cricket". The chief selector spoke about Iyer’s brilliant performances in ODIs and domestic cricket and praised the cricketer for his consistency. Iyer has had an incredible season in domestic cricket, where he amassed a significant number of runs. He is currently captaining the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL and has helped them qualify for the playoffs after ten years.

"Shreyas had a good one-day series, played well in domestic as well, but right now there’s no room in Test cricket," said Ajit Agarkar during the press conference.

Karun Nair, Shardul Thakur in; Harshit Rana out

The five-match Test series against England will begin in June 2025, and India are well prepared for it. The selectors have brought in Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur to provide the experience the team will lack in England, with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma having retired from Test cricket.

Moreover, Harshit Rana has been left out following his poor performance in Australia. The squad includes seven pacers, which will come in handy in English conditions.
