A pharmacist has warned against in a certain way as it can help bacteria thrive. Álvaro Fernández explained on TikTok that using the dishwasher is actually counterproductive because wooden utensils have pores, cracks and small gaps in them which can break open in the high temperatures of the machine.
This can dry out the wood which can make it more porous. This in turn makes them less hygienic, and it can also shorten the lifespan of the utensils. He explained: "If you put it in the dishwasher at high temperatures and high humidity, it's easier for the wood to crack even more, develop splinters, and allow bacteria and other things to seep in, which can cause serious infections. It makes it easier for microorganisms to seep in and survive."
Instead, he recommended a three-step approach to wash utensils which help avoid the risk of wood cracking and leading to bacteria.
He suggested washing them by hand with warm water with some soap, instead of the hot water that is churned around in a dishwasher.
Then, to prevent moisture build up, which can be a breeding ground for bacteria, he said they must be dried throughouly after washing.
From time to time to prevent the utensils drying out and cracking, which can add to the bacteria breeding ground, he suggested applying mineral oil from time to time.
"This will help keep the wood moisturised and protected," he said.
Experts at , where they shared twelve types of utensils that should be hand washed.
They recommended keeping kitchen knives, blender blades, non-stick items and copper and aluminum cookware away from the dishwasher, as well as wooden spoons and chopping boards.
